No A/Ls? This is the way in.

The Foundation in Information Technology is a pre-degree programme run and certified by the UCSC. Finish it and you hold an accepted entry qualification for the BIT, whatever you studied at A/L, and whether or not you sat them at all.

What FIT Is

A pre-degree year, not a short course.

FIT exists to get you ready to read for a first degree. It builds the everyday computing you will be expected to already have, along with the English and the mathematics that degree-level IT study leans on. The University of Colombo School of Computing administers it and issues the certificate.

Apply now

01 Who can register

  • Anyone, whichever stream you followed at A/L
  • You should have finished your G.C.E. (O/L)
  • No A/L passes required, and no computing background either
Start whenever you are ready.

There is no single intake to wait for. You register when you want to begin and sit each examination when you feel prepared for it.

The Programme

Three courses.

One builds the computing, one the English you will read and write your coursework in, and one the mathematics the degree assumes you already know.

FIT 103

ICT Applications

Working confidently with everyday computer applications: the tools you will be expected to use from your first week of degree study onward.

FIT 203

English for ICT

The English that IT study actually runs on: reading technical material, writing it, and following a lecture delivered in it.

FIT 303

Mathematics for ICT

The mathematics behind computing, taken from the beginning, so the degree modules that assume it do not catch you out.

02 How you study

  • Registered students get the UCSC online learning environment, FITVLE
  • Classes and guidance at CICT in Kokuvil alongside it
  • Study at your own pace and sit each test when you are ready

03 How you are examined

  • Three e-tests, sat on the UCSC e-testing system
  • Two practical tests, at a computer rather than on paper
  • Apply for each examination when you are prepared for it
Pass the theory components and the BIT opens.

Passing all of the theory components of FIT is an accepted entry qualification for the UCSC BIT degree. That is what the programme is for: it is the route in for people the A/L route did not work out for. Registration and examination fees are set by the UCSC and change from time to time, so check fit.bit.lk or ask our office on 021 222 9886 for the current figures.
