BIT at the University of Colombo (UCSC).
Sri Lanka's first-ever external degree in Information Technology, awarded by the University of Colombo, taught here in Jaffna by an officially recognized UCSC teaching institute.
Three levels. A qualification at every step.
Level I: Diploma in IT
Year one, semesters 1 and 2. It carries 31 credits, of which at least 30 must be GPA credits. Finish this level and you already hold a University of Colombo qualification, even if you go no further.
Award: Diploma in Information TechnologyLevel II: Higher Diploma in IT
Year two, semesters 3 and 4, and a minimum of 30 GPA credits. This is where the work gets serious: information security, data structures, enterprise development, UX and project management.
Award: Higher Diploma in Information TechnologyLevel III: the BIT degree
Year three, semesters 5 and 6, another 30 GPA credits: built around an 8-credit Software Development Project that runs across both semesters. You choose electives alongside it.
Award: Bachelor of Information TechnologyEach level has to be finished within three years of registering for it, and the whole degree can be spread over six. Plenty of our students are working full time while they study.

- Lectures and tutorials on campus in Kokuvil, or live over Zoom if you can't travel
- The UCSC Virtual Learning Environment for notes, quizzes and assignments
- Lab sessions, so you write code rather than only read about it
- Every class recorded and posted to Google Classroom, so you can go back over anything you missed
- Past-paper clinics in the weeks before each exam
Do you qualify?
UCSC asks for two things, and you need both. Most people assume A/Ls are the only way in, they aren't. There are six other routes.
A Entry qualification (any one)
- Three passes at local G.C.E. A/L (new syllabus) in one sitting
- Four passes at local G.C.E. A/L (old syllabus) in one sitting
- Three passes at Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel International A/L in one sitting
- All the theory components of the UCSC's own FIT programme
- The HNDIT, verified by SLIATE
- NVQ Level 5 or above in IT, verified by TVEC
- Anything the University Senate accepts as equivalent
B School qualification (any one)
- Six passes at G.C.E. O/L with three credits. Those credits must include Mathematics and English
- The same at Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel International O Level
- Anything the University Senate accepts as equivalent

UCSC rewrote the BIT syllabus for the 2026/2027 academic year. It leans much harder into what employers are hiring for now: full-stack development, machine learning, cybersecurity, data analytics and mobile apps.

Every year starts on 15.08.2026.
First, second and third year all begin the same day. Years one and two run on weekend mornings and third year on weekend afternoons, so people already in a job can still attend. Come to Kokuvil, join the same class live on Zoom, or watch the recording afterwards on Google Classroom.

Two separate payments.
There is a university side and a college side, and they are billed independently. Neither is fixed for long, so we would rather you had the current figure from us than an out-of-date one off a web page.
1 Paid to the university
Application, registration and examination fees go directly to the UCSC. The university sets these and revises them between intakes, so the only reliable source is their own site.

Our own tuition covers the lectures, tutorials, lab sessions, recordings and past-paper clinics, and it depends on the level you are joining. Call the office and we will tell you the current figure, with no obligation.

Your GPA, and why it's worth chasing.
Every graded course earns a grade point, weighted by how many credits the course carries. Add those up, divide by your total credits, and that's your GPA. It decides the class printed on your degree, and that line follows you for the rest of your career.
