A degree that pays you back at every level.
The University of Moratuwa BIT is one degree in three stages, and each stage awards its own qualification. Leave after any of them and you leave with something in hand. Taught at CICT in Kokuvil.
You are never studying for nothing.
Most degrees give you one thing at the very end, and nothing at all if life gets in the way. Moratuwa built this one differently: finish year one and the Diploma is yours, finish year two and the Higher Diploma is yours, whatever happens next.
Three levels, three awards.
Level 1 · the Diploma year
Where you start straight after A/Ls. Programming, systems and the mathematics underneath them. Pass it and the University of Moratuwa Diploma in Information Technology is yours.
Award: Diploma in ITLevel 2 · the Higher Diploma year
Software engineering, databases and networks at professional depth. This is the year that turns someone who can code into someone who can build and maintain a system.
Award: Higher Diploma in ITLevel 3 · the degree year
Compulsory modules plus electives you choose yourself, so the last year points where you want to go. This is also where lateral entrants join.
Award: BIT degree✓ What CICT adds
- Moratuwa runs this degree at a distance. Studying it alone, from a screen, is where most people come unstuck.
- Lectures and tutorials in Kokuvil, in English and தமிழ், with a lecturer in front of you
- Lab time for the practical work, rather than reading about it
- Continuous assessment chased and past papers worked through before every exam
Send us your results. We will tell you which route you qualify for and where you would join, and it costs nothing to ask.
Two ways in, and one of them skips years.
Start at Level 1 from A/Ls, or come in further up if you already hold an IT qualification. Moratuwa decides every admission; we only help you work out which route is yours.
A Start at Level 1
- Three S passes at G.C.E. A/L in any stream, in one sitting
- A credit pass in Mathematics at G.C.E. O/L, which is required alongside the A/L passes
- or
- NVQ Level 4 or 5 in an IT field, with the same O/L Mathematics credit
- or
- A foreign qualification the University accepts as equivalent
- Some applicants sit an aptitude test set by CODL
B Join further up
- HNDIT from SLIATE. Full time or part time, both are accepted
- NDT in IT from ITUM. Every module completed, industrial training aside
- A BIT Diploma or Higher Diploma you already earned on this same programme
- Lateral entry routes carry an aptitude test, and the level you join depends on what you hold
The exam is only half of it.
Continuous assessment
Coursework and assignments carried through the module, submitted online as you go.
Final examination
Sat at the end of the module. Its weight against the coursework varies from module to module.
One gates the other
You have to pass the continuous assessment before you are allowed to sit the final paper, so the work cannot be left to the last month.
What you will study.
One hundred credits across the three levels: 30, then 34, then 36. Level 3 is the only one where you choose, and the modules below are the University’s published syllabus.
Set out as published by the University of Moratuwa. A revised syllabus took effect in August 2024, so check bit.uom.lk for the version that applies to your intake.

Every elective is 3 credits, so 18 credits is six of them, taken 6 credits in Semester 1 and 12 in Semester 2. The Project registers in Semester 1 and carries 40% of its work there and 60% in Semester 2, so it runs across the whole year rather than being something to start late.
CODL has said the next intake will be announced. Registration and fees are handled by the University of Moratuwa directly, never by us, so bit.uom.lk is where the dates and the current fee appear first. Tell us you are interested and we will let you know the moment it opens.

A distance degree does not have to be studied alone.
